Grammar Patterns

비음화 (받침 ㄱ/ㄷ/ㅂ → ㅇ/ㄴ/ㅁ) Nasalization: stops become nasals

When a final consonant ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅂ (and sounds that become them, like ㄲ, ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅍ) meets a following ㄴ or ㅁ, the stop changes into the matching nasal sound: ㄱ→ㅇ, ㄷ→ㄴ, ㅂ→ㅁ. The spelling stays the same; only the pronunciation changes.

국물 [궁물] — soup broth — pronounced 'gungmul'
gungmul (written gukmul)
받는다 [반는다] — receives — pronounced 'banneunda'
banneunda (written batneunda)
입니다 [임니다] — it is (formal) — pronounced 'imnida'
imnida (written ipnida)
비음화 (받침 ㄱ/ㅂ/ㅇ/ㅁ + ㄹ → ㄴ) Nasalization: ㄹ becomes ㄴ

When ㄹ follows the consonants ㄱ, ㅂ, ㅇ, or ㅁ, the ㄹ changes to ㄴ. Additionally, after ㄱ or ㅂ this often triggers further nasalization of the preceding stop too. This is common in Sino-Korean vocabulary.

심리 [심니] — psychology — pronounced 'simni'
simni (written simli)
정리 [정니] — arrangement/tidying — pronounced 'jeongni'
jeongni (written jeongli)
대통령 [대ː통녕] — president — pronounced 'daetongnyeong'
daetongnyeong (written daetonglyeong)
유음화 (ㄴ + ㄹ → ㄹㄹ / ㄹ + ㄴ → ㄹㄹ) Liquidization: ㄴ↔ㄹ become ㄹㄹ

When ㄴ and ㄹ come next to each other (in either order), the ㄴ changes to ㄹ, so both are pronounced as a doubled liquid 'll'. This applies to ㄴ+ㄹ and ㄹ+ㄴ boundaries.

신라 [실라] — Silla (ancient kingdom) — pronounced 'silla'
silla (written sinla)
설날 [설ː랄] — Lunar New Year — pronounced 'seollal'
seollal (written seolnal)
연락 [열락] — contact — pronounced 'yeollak'
yeollak (written yeonlak)
