Grammar Patterns
ㅏ/ㅓ 계열 단모음 합성: ㅐ ㅔ ㅒ ㅖ Front compound vowels (ㅐㅔㅒㅖ) These come from a base vowel plus ㅣ. ㅏ+ㅣ=ㅐ (ae), ㅓ+ㅣ=ㅔ (e), ㅑ+ㅣ=ㅒ (yae), ㅕ+ㅣ=ㅖ (ye). In modern Korean ㅐ and ㅔ are pronounced almost the same, and so are ㅒ and ㅖ. The y-versions (ㅒ, ㅖ) add a 'y' glide at the start.
ㅏ + ㅣ = ㅐ → 개 — a + i = ae → dog
a + i = ae → gae
ㅓ + ㅣ = ㅔ → 네 — eo + i = e → yes
eo + i = e → ne
ㅕ + ㅣ = ㅖ → 예 — yeo + i = ye → yes (polite)
yeo + i = ye → ye
ㅗ 계열 이중모음: ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ ㅗ-based diphthongs (ㅘㅙㅚ) Start with ㅗ (o) as a 'w' glide, then add another vowel. ㅗ+ㅏ=ㅘ (wa), ㅗ+ㅐ=ㅙ (wae), ㅗ+ㅣ=ㅚ (oe, often pronounced 'we'). Say the first sound quickly and glide into the second.
ㅗ + ㅏ = ㅘ → 사과 — o + a = wa → apple
o + a = wa → sagwa
ㅗ + ㅐ = ㅙ → 돼지 — o + ae = wae → pig
o + ae = wae → dwaeji
ㅗ + ㅣ = ㅚ → 회사 — o + i = oe → company
o + i = oe → hoesa
ㅜ·ㅡ 계열 이중모음: ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ ㅢ ㅜ/ㅡ-based diphthongs (ㅝㅞㅟㅢ) ㅜ (u) also acts as a 'w' glide: ㅜ+ㅓ=ㅝ (wo), ㅜ+ㅔ=ㅞ (we), ㅜ+ㅣ=ㅟ (wi). Separately, ㅡ+ㅣ=ㅢ (ui), the only one built on ㅡ. Note ㅙ, ㅚ, and ㅞ all sound like 'we' in modern speech.
ㅜ + ㅓ = ㅝ → 더워요 — u + eo = wo → it's hot
u + eo = wo → deowoyo
ㅜ + ㅣ = ㅟ → 가위 — u + i = wi → scissors
u + i = wi → gawi
ㅡ + ㅣ = ㅢ → 의자 — eu + i = ui → chair
eu + i = ui → uija
