2017년 개봉한 장훈 감독의 실화 바탕 드라마. 1980년 5월, 서울의 택시운전사 만섭(송강호)은 밀린 사글세 때문에 거금이 걸린 손님을 가로챈다. 그 손님은 광주의 상황을 취재하려는 독일 기자 위르겐 힌츠페터(토마스 크레치만). 통금 전 서울로 돌아오는 조건으로 만섭은 영문도 모른 채 광주로 향한다. 봉쇄된 도시에 들어선 두 사람은 계엄군의 무자비한 진압과 시민들의 처절한 저항을 목격한다. 그저 돈벌이로 시작한 만섭은 광주 시민들의 고통을 직접 마주하며 점차 변해가고, 위험을 무릅쓰고 진실의 기록을 세상에 내보내려 한다.
Released in 2017 and directed by Jang Hoon, A Taxi Driver is a fact-based drama set during the May 1980 Gwangju Uprising. Man-seob (Song Kang-ho), a widowed Seoul taxi driver struggling to pay his overdue rent, overhears a lucrative fare and snatches it for himself. The passenger turns out to be Jürgen Hinzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann), a German journalist determined to slip into Gwangju to film what is really happening there. Promised a large sum if he can get the reporter back to Seoul before curfew, the apolitical Man-seob drives south with no idea of what he is heading into. Entering the sealed-off, blockaded city, the two men witness the brutal crackdown of martial-law troops and the desperate resistance of ordinary citizens. What began as a simple money-making errand transforms Man-seob as he comes face to face with the suffering of Gwangju's people, and he risks his life to help carry the journalist's footage—and the truth—out to the world.

Estrenada en 2017 y dirigida por Jang Hoon, A Taxi Driver es un drama basado en hechos reales ambientado durante el Levantamiento de Gwangju de mayo de 1980. Man-seob (Song Kang-ho), un taxista viudo de Seúl que apenas puede pagar el alquiler atrasado, se entera de una carrera muy bien pagada y se la arrebata a un compañero. El pasajero resulta ser Jürgen Hinzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann), un periodista alemán decidido a colarse en Gwangju para filmar lo que realmente está ocurriendo. Con la promesa de una buena suma si logra devolver al reportero a Seúl antes del toque de queda, el apolítico Man-seob conduce hacia el sur sin saber lo que le espera. Al entrar en la ciudad sitiada y bloqueada, ambos son testigos de la brutal represión de las tropas de la ley marcial y de la desesperada resistencia de los ciudadanos. A Taxi Driver transforms one of the darkest chapters of modern Korean history into an intimate, deeply moving human story by viewing it through the eyes of an ordinary man. Rather than confronting the 1980 Gwangju Uprising as a sweeping historical epic, director Jang Hoon grounds the tragedy in the gradual awakening of Man-seob, a self-interested Seoul cabbie who drives south purely for the fare and ends up witnessing atrocities he can neither forget nor ignore. Song Kang-ho gives one of his finest performances, moving fluidly between comedy and heartbreak, cowardice and courage, and embodying with extraordinary nuance the moment an apolitical everyman's conscience is stirred awake. Thomas Kretschmann lends gravity as the real-life German reporter Jürgen Hinzpeter, whose footage helped reveal the truth of Gwangju to the world; using a foreigner's outsider perspective allows the film to lead audiences into the sealed city as bewildered witnesses themselves. The film is unafraid of sentiment, and its emotional swells are earned through patient character work rather than spectacle. En lugar de abordar el Levantamiento de Gwangju de 1980 como una épica histórica grandiosa, el director Jang Hoon ancla la tragedia en el despertar gradual de Man-seob, un taxista de Seúl interesado solo en el dinero que conduce hacia el sur únicamente por la tarifa y acaba presenciando atrocidades que no puede olvidar ni ignorar. Song Kang-ho ofrece una de sus mejores interpretaciones, transitando con fluidez entre la comedia y el desgarro, la cobardía y el valor, y encarnando con extraordinaria sutileza el momento en que se despierta la conciencia de un hombre común y apolítico.
